PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has detected an individual falsely claiming to be a high-ranking employee at the commission on a professional networking platform.
In a statement issued today (June 28), MCMC said the individual who is using the profile name ‘Danta Kunye’ on LinkedIn listed his position as a managing director at the agency.
Based on its investigations, MCMC said the individual is not their employee, adding that under its organisational structure, there is no managing director post or title. As such, the agency said it has reported the account holder to LinkedIn for further action.
MCMC warns that such accounts could be created with the intention to mislead members of the public as part of a scam by irresponsible parties. It advised members of the public to be aware of suspicious accounts and to contact authorities for clarification.
Fake profiles have become an issue on LinkedIn and the company has announced measures to take down such accounts.
From January to June 2020, the company said in a Community Report that it has stopped 33.7 million fake accounts at registration, restricted 3.1 million fake accounts based on its own proactive measures, and more than 100,000 accounts were restricted after receiving reports from members.
Then from July to December 2020, the company stopped 11.6 million fake accounts at registration, proactively restricted three million and restricted up to another 111,000 accounts after receiving reports from users.
It added that up to 98.3% fake accounts were blocked using automated measures while 1.7% were stopped through manual review. In the same period, it has also detected and removed 22.4 million spam or scam content from the platform.-The Star
