SHAH ALAM: The move to implement voting for those 18-years-old and above is a long process as it entails several amendments involving election provisions which need to be followed and adhered to.

Senior International Trade and Industry Minister, Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali said the amendments also need to be gazetted at both the federal and state level.

“So, at the state level we must also make amendments, if we want to allow at the parliamentary level only but not at the State Assembly (DUN) level, it is not possible… I understand only one state has gone through the process,” he said when asked to comment on the implementation of Undi18.

He said this in a press conference after the ‘Rapat Malaysia Prihatin’ programme with the International Trade Minister, here today.

Also present was the Director General of Public Service, Tan Sri Mohd Khairul Adib And Rahman.

Azmin who is the Perikatan Nasional election director said though the matter had been tabled in Parliament to be debated and passed, it does not mean the process has been completed.

“We took this amendment to Parliament, debated it and passed it in Parliament but it does not end there as it involves a process where many provisions need to be amended, an example being the electoral roll.

“The decision to allow our young people to be involved in the democratic process has been made but some amendments to the Electoral provisions must also be made to meet the amendments at the Federal level.

“The Election Commission (EC) has also explained.. it just so happens that there is a Movement Control Order… it may have disrupted the process… so they need more time for the process (to be completed),” he said.-NST
