Sibu OCPD, Asst Comm Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said the 59-year-old suspect had acted aggressively after he suspected that the victim had broken into his house which the victim’s girlfriend was renting in Jalan Hua Khiew.

ACP Stanley said that at about 5pm, the 21-year victim was at Sibu Gateway with his girlfriend, 28, when a police MPV team told them to disperse.

“When the couple arrived at the house, they saw broken pieces of glass on the floor. The suspect, armed with a machete, showed up on a motorcycle and angrily accused the victim of breaking into the house and damaging the windows,” he said.

When both of them denied it, the suspect, who is a retired technician, brandished his machete and cut off the victim’s left hand.

“The victim and his girlfriend fled the scene to avoid further attacks and were taken by a member of the public to seek help from the police,” ACP Stanley said.

A police team rushed to the house to locate the victim’s hand and the machete but could not find them.

ACP Stanley said police believed that the suspect had thrown it away.

“The suspect’s wife revealed that he has been suffering from mental illness for the past five years and had not sought treatment,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt using a dangerous weapon.- The Star
