March 1 2020– Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin becomes the 8th Prime Minister of Malaysia with the backing of his own party Bersatu and UMNO & PAS. Bersatu has 31 seats, PAS has 18 seats while 36 seats given by UMNO to make Muhyiddin Yassin take a fragile advantage on the numbers to be the 8th PM of Malaysia.
March 8 2020– 8th Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announces his cabinet. The Cabinet consists of 11 Ministers and 14 Deputy ministers from BN (UMNO,MIC,MCA), 13 Ministers and 17 Deputy ministers from BERSATU, while PAS have 3 and 5 Ministers and Deputy ministers respectively. Muhyiddin led Bersatu had the majority in the cabinet despite being a small party.
July 28 2020– Datuk Seri Najib Razak found guilty and convicted for abuse of power and misappropriating over RM42 million from 1Malaysia Development Berhad’s (1MDB) former subsidiary SRC International Sdn Bhd.
By this time UMNO was still backing the Perikatan Nasional government.
July 29 2020 -Umno has decided against joining Perikatan Nasional (PN) but will continue to support the coalition to form the federal government as well as several state administrations. When asked if Umno’s decision was related to Najib Razak’s corruption conviction, Zahid Hamidi said it was “up to the media to interpret it”.
28 August 2020– Zahid wants a snap election. Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the slim majority in the Dewan Rakyat has created the perception that the government is unstable and exposed it to ridicule.“We have no choice but to obtain a new mandate to avoid these allegations (backdoor government). Therefore, the right of choosing the government must be returned to the people.“So I predict that GE15 will be held soon,” he was quoted as saying by Berita Harian Online.
October 11 2020– Zahid and Najib Razak have written letters to the palace in support of Anwar. The revelation comes three days after Anwar was granted a 25-minute audience with Sultan Abdullah, only for the palace to issue a damning statement some three hours later, telling the PKR leader to follow the legal process. In the letter dated Oct 11, addressed to Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, they said that they, along with “a group of Umno MPs”, were backing Anwar.“No names were mentioned except theirs,” the source told MalaysiaNow under condition of strict anonymity.
October 13 2020– During UMNO’s political bureau president Zahid Hamidi proposed new terms in exchange for a continuous working relationship with the Perikatan Nasional government. Umno secretary-general Datuk Ahmad Maslan had also said the party was considering withdrawing its support for the PN.
October 16 2020– BN’s secretary – general Annuar Musa said to reporters that UMNO, PAS and Bersatu are helding talks to resolve an impasse affecting their political cooperation.
October 23 2020– Muhyiddin seeking to declare Emergency. The 8th Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin proposed a declaration of Emergency to our King. This could be a move to curb any decision by other coalition parties to move out from his current administration.
October 26 2020– King rejects the proposal for Emergency by the PM. Political, constitutional and legal experts said this in the wake of Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah’s decision yesterday on there being no necessity for such a proclamation as requested by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
October 26 2020– BN held an emergency meeting to decide their stand on Muhyiddin Yassin as PM.
October 29 2020– UMNO supreme council held a meeting to decide Who will be the DPM, Chaired by Zahid Hamidi. But the outcome of the meeting was to have an election after the pandemic resolves. Its president, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, said Umno has always been a party that puts the people’s agenda first.”Therefore, all Cabinet members representing Umno will continue to remain in government and are committed in continuing to look after the welfare of the people and defend the party’s dignity,” he said in a statement after attending an Umno Supreme Council special meeting.
November 4 2020– ’43 BN MPs agree to back Budget 2021′. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said all the BN MPs who met on Nov 3 agreed to support all Bills to be tabled by the government.
November 19 2020– Zahid Hamidi proposes government table motion of confidence in Parliament. The Perikatan Nasional (PN) government should test its majority in the Dewan Rakyat by bringing up the motion of confidence submitted by members of parliament instead of pursuing an emergency proclamation.Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Barisan Nasional-Bagan Datuk) today called on the government to make the vote of confidence a priority, adding that an emergency declaration should not be considered as an option.
December 8 2020– Ahmad Zahid submits MB candidate names to Sultan Nazrin after a political crisis in Perak. Asked whether the new state government will see cooperation between Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Pas again, Ahmad Zahid said it would be best to retain the Perikatan Nasional (PN) state government. “I have said this before – that if possible, we want to retain cooperation with Umno, Bersatu and Pas,” he said.
December 9 2020– UMNO’s state chairman YAB Saarani Mohammad appointed as MB of Perak after BERSATU’s YB Ahmad Faizul Azumu lost majority during a motion in the state assembly.
January 2 2021– UMNO will work with PAS but not BERSATU in GE15. “Based on a survey, more than 140, or two-thirds, of Umno division heads across the country also stated the same stance”,said Datuk Seri Tajudin Abdul Rahman, UMNO election director.
January 7 2021-Umno to push for GE15 before end of first quarter 2021.
Umno will raise a motion to sever ties with Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in the 15th General Election (GE15), during its annual general assembly on Jan 31.
“Among other motions that would be raised include to strengthen its relations with Pas through the Muafakat Nasional pact, and to push for GE15 before the end of the first quarter of this year” said Party information chief Shahril Hamdan in a statement.
“The meeting has gone through all the motions proposed by the 189 divisions nationwide.
“The Supreme Council meeting has agreed to raise these motions during the Umno General Assembly on Jan 31 to be debated and decided, based on the party’s constitution,” he said in a statement after the party’s Supreme Council meeting at the Umno headquarters.
Jan 9 2021– Machang Member of Parliament (MP) from Barisan Nasional (BN), Datuk Ahmad Jazlan Yaakob has announced that he is withdrawing his support for the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government led by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
January 12 2021– UMNO’s Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz withdraws support for PN government followed by Datuk Ahmad Jazlan and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
January 12 2021– Yang di-Pertuan Agong declares ‘Emergency’ until August 1 following a meeting with Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin at palace.
The outcome of the emergency potentially will halt any preparation for GE15 by UMNO.
The calls have come from the grassroots and youths of UMNO.
Jan 14 2021– Pontian Youth Chief of UMNO Mohd Helmi Buang told other party veterans who have served for many terms should also consider taking a break so the party can move forward in accordance with the times. He was referring to Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is the President of UMNO. “These actions are important so that the new generation will continue to respect and love the party,” Helmi was quoted saying.
Jan 14 2021– Seremban UMNO Youth Chief also wants Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to leave the party, as he goes along with Pontian Youth Chief’s point of view. “I agree with the Pontian UMNO Youth Chief, in fact this matter has long been voiced in UMNO branch, division and divisional Youth meetings in Seremban” said Seremban UMNO Youth Chief Zool Amali Hussin.
Jan 22 2021– Calls for Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to step down are getting louder, and joining the chorus today is Umno’s Paya Besar division chief Datuk Ahmad Tajuddin Sulaiman. Ahmad also highlighted the many court cases involving Umno leaders, including Ahmad Zahid himself, who is facing a total of 87 charges for corruption and abuse of power, among others. This, Ahmad said, is causing a strain on Umno, as the party is now forced to carry the burden of leaders who are currently facing criminal charges.”For the sake of the Malay race, Umno, loyalty and the determination of the 3.6 million party members, Ahmad Zahid ought to let go of his responsibilities as the Umno president,” Ahmad said.
With the Emergency in place, court proceedings going on as usual, pressure from in and out of the party, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is under immense pressure.- The Capital Post
