KOTA KINABALU: Brighter days are expected for Sabahans in flood-hit areas as better weather has been forecasted.
As of noon Tuesday (Jan 19), there are still 860 flood evacuees at 15 centres in seven flood-stricken districts and the situation is expected to improve as bad weather has been forecasted to last just one more day.
The rain started early last week and brought landslides and damages to roads, bridges and infrastructure around the state.
Two relief centres – one each in the districts of Penampang and Putatan – were deactivated earlier Tuesday and flood victims allowed to return home, according to the state disaster management committee secretariat.
Previously, continuous rain coupled with a high tide phenomenon caused villages, suburban areas and houses to be inundated.
Sabah Meteorological Department director Amir Zudi Hashim said weather in the west coast had already turned for the better.
“We anticipate the weather after this to return to normal and not cause more flooding … it is already improving now.
“Right now it is sunny in the west coast, there might be some rain in some parts later in the evening, but I think the worst has passed,” he said.-The Star
