Man dies, two others injured in Sabah fire

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man was killed while two others sustained burns in a fire at the Kepayan low-cost housing area on Monday (Oct 12).

The remains of the 65-year-old victim, Liew Han Chong, was found in the second-floor bathroom of his semi-concrete house following the midnight blaze.

It is believed he was trying to make his way out of the burning structure.

A three-year-old boy and his 32-year-old mother sustained minor burns as they managed to flee their burning house located next door.

Sabah Fire and Rescue Department commanding officer Idy Nirwan Iliyas said when firemen reached the scene following a distress call at 12.24am, the two houses were already completely engulfed by flames.

He said firemen managed to bring the fire under control at 1.28am and operations ceased at 2.56am.

Idy said the injured victims were given preliminary treatment before they were taken to the hospital for further examination.

The remains of the deceased was also taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.
