49 remanded to assist probe into roadside Aidiladha prayers

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Forty-eight foreign men and a Malaysian senior citizen have been remanded to assist investigations into violation of Covid-19 SOPs by holding roadside Aidiladha prayers at Taman Pelangi in Juru here yesterday.

Hasliza Razak, assistant registrar at the magistrates’ court here, allowed a remand order from today to Friday for the Malaysian, aged 64, and until Saturday for the 48 foreigners, whose ages range from 20 to 43.

The case is being investigated under Section 269 of the Penal Code in relation to negligent acts that can cause the spread of any life-threatening disease.

The 49 were brought to the court in police lock-up clothes.

Yesterday, a video went viral on social media showing a group of men in the housing area performing prayers in a car park by the roadside.

Home minister Hamzah Zainudin later gave an assurance in a statement that stern action would be taken against the individuals and organisers involved for alleged violation of SOPs pertaining to Aidiladha prayers.-BERNAMA
