The DAP MP said residents were getting frantic and panicking about the rising number of cases there, urging the health ministry to set up a Klang Covid-19 response team to allay their fears.

He said this taskforce could involve federal and state officials, health NGOs, professional bodies, the Klang municipal council and business community, with the aim of monitoring and providing the daily Covid-19 reports and mobilising local communities to address the spike.

“There is a need to manage information effectively to create confidence among local communities and businesses. One such strategy is the ‘all of government’ and ‘all of society’ approach, where every possible resource available is used effectively.

“The response team could bring on-board private sector doctors and medical facilities to compliment the public sector in its efforts.

“As transparency is key in addressing the pandemic, the response team needs to provide a daily update on the situation in Klang/Kapar. These updates will counter fake or false information that is rampant at this time,” he said in a statement today.

Santiago added that some health experts had warned that Klang could turn into a “mini Sabah” with the spike in cases if the situation is not contained.

He added that Klang and Kapar have recorded 3,724 infections and 10 deaths collectively, with 4,310 active cases currently.

“The cumulative number of infections is about 11,378. Yes, these statistics are frightening. Yes, people have a legitimate reason to panic.

“So let’s change our approach. Let’s bring all key stakeholders together and work towards a better solution.” – FMT
