KUALA LUMPUR: Three highway construction workers were killed when one of the gantry crane components collapsed near Puncak Banyan, Persiaran Alam Damai, here, this morning.
Projek Lintasan Sungai Besi-Ulu Klang Sdn Bhd (Prolintas) in a statement confirmed that the incident occurred at the SUKE multi-level highway construction site.
“Initial investigations showed that three construction workers, all Chinese citizens, died at the scene while a motorist was injured in the incident.
“We understand that the tragedy occurred when one of gantry crane components collapsed. However, the cause of the incident still under investigation,” Prolintas said.
Prolintas added that following the incident, SUKE’s Emergency Response Team along with the fire and rescue department closed the road.
Meanwhile, City Fire and Rescue Department spokesman in a statement said they got a distress call at 8.45am.
Twenty-five personnel with three engines and one Emergency Medical Rescue Services van were deployed from Cheras, Tun Razak and Hang Tuah fire stations to the scene
Operation commander, Mohd Khairu; Azmi Jaafar, said upon arriving at the scene, the team noticed that a crane launcher steel structure had collapsed and landed on a Perodua Bezza car. Operations are still ongoing at the scene.-NST
